Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Cardiff is a Cardiff-based support group for grandparents and other kinship carers caring for a child full-time. All of the committee are grandparents with personal understanding of these situations.

What is “kinship care” – Kinship care means an arrangement where children live a relative or a close friend, not their birth parents. These children may have already suffered some kind of loss or trauma. The only alternative to kinship care is local authority care – and possibly adoption.

  • We reach out to every grandparent and kinship carer who is looking after a child, and provide the opportunity to meet others in similar situations.
  • We extend the hand of friendship to grandparents who are struggling to retain contact with their grandchildren.
  • We offer emotional and practical support, and access to information and advice, such as helping grandparents and kinship carers understand their rights, legal options and financial entitlements, or helping prepare for meetings or assessments and interacting with professionals.
  • We promote a positive attitude to Kinship Care, and signpost carers to services and organisations who can help.

Grandparents and kinship carers become full-time carers for all sorts of reasons. And raising a child can be challenging as well as rewarding. Life has changed since you raised your own children. u might feel isolated, or overwhelmed. Answers can be difficult to find.

GRG Cardiff is the hand to hold, the listening ear, the shoulder to cry on, GRG Cardiff can provide information, from grandparents who have been in similar situations, and support you in the impact of difficult decisions.
